Johnathan Lucht
Project 1: Ocean Diver Magazine

Ocean Diver magazine is a fictional diving enthusiast magazine. The magazine would feature articles about diving gear, coral reefs, underwater ecosystems, diving spots and the effect of climate change on the ocean. I used line in the design to guide the reader through the page and to establish unity throughout the design and also because divers actually follow diving lines down into the ocean. I kept my colors mainly to deep blues and greens to create a natural feeling of the ocean. Overall I was very pleased with final piece but i'm open to any criticism that anyone has.

  1. The cover has a nice contrast between the ocean and the diver. I also like how you made the shark as if it was coming towards but leads you into the next page. The barcode at the bottom has more of a focal point than the sub titles. I would make that smaller and the sub titles more of the focal point. I like how the contents page and spread are unified as if you are going deeper into the ocean bottom.

  2. I like how the A and V create one shape and are green to create contrast. I also love the use of blue and green because it reflects the colors associated with the ocean and ocean life. The contents page looks a lot more clean with only 3 numbers instead of the 5 or 6 from before.

  3. Johnathan - the changes you have made are resulting in a more finished design, with most details attended to. Nice. I agree with what has been said here previously. A few last details:

    1. Yes, the barcode is dominating the bottom of your cover. Did you know that you can reduce the barcode?

UPC bar codes can range from 0.8 to 2.0 magnification. At 0.8, the bar code is reduced to 80 percent from the nominal size. At this magnification, the bar code is 1.175 inches wide by 0.816 inches high. This is the smallest that a bar code can be and still be scanned.

You can also put it on the back cover too. But, I suggest you reduce it and make sure the type style used for your cut lines is bold enough to stand up to it.

    2. Contents - more relaxed and easily navigated. I would suggest you edit the 3 lines next to “48” to become only 1 or 2. How about “Danger After Hurricane Harvey”?

    3. Spread is well designed. Do you usually see an extended Journal Reference like this in magazine articles? I think it could/should be shorter and that might give you more room to increase the leading in the body copy… making it more inviting to read. Please print this so I can proof it in class.

    Well done!
