Alice in Wonderland (Bookworm Magazine)

Alice in Wonderland Magazine Project

Bookworm is a fictional magazine for bookworms by bookworms. This magazine would showcase a different book each month and feature article on it. The article could range from a new film coming soon or a history about the book itself on it's anniversary. This magazine would primarily be geared towards book lovers, writers, history lovers, etc.

  1. I like the font choices for the magazine and the layout of the spreads page. The illstrations through out the magazines brings it together well. I’m not sure of the double barcode; I would keep it simple. On the contents page I would center the word contents along the edge because the C gets lost from the top and the text in the gray box gets lost it would better if the number was a different color to indicate that’s the feature article. Lastly I would make S in the first paragraph in the spread a drop cap because it’s a little confusing of why the S is there. But overall this ha really cool concept.

  2. Kaitlyn - this publication is fun to look at, and conveys the child-like quality of the story itself. Nice! A few things to think about:

Cover: I’m wondering if the small black type in the masthead at the top of the page gets lost in all that red? Since the magazine name uses sans serif, but this is a good time to change the font to a bolder sans serif… leaving it black and exactly where it is placed. That might emphasize it just enough to be more readable.

Does the illustration seem to end rather abruptly on the left? The off-white color inside the lines also seems to end randomly. Think about this as an element that needs a left hand side delineated. What could be done?

Contents: It looks like you want to emphasize the article about Alice in Wonderland. I wonder if it means you need to remove it from the rest of the list and find another place for it? Maybe down at the bottom nearer the illustration? Or, at the top of the page separated from the rest of the list? I say this because I don’t feel like the grey box behind it currently works with the other shapes on the page.

Is the Contents a left or right page? Either way, you probably need to add another page to this project to sit across from the Contents. Sometimes that is an excellent place for an ad… but in this literary magazine maybe instead a short 1-page department article (which lots of mini-stories) would make sense. A department is a reoccurring section of a magazine that is filled with smaller items. An example of a department here might be “Poems from the Past”, or “Editor’s Note”. The point would be to design 2 pages, one of which is the Contents and the other would be sitting on the facing page.

Editorial Article: This looks really great, although the large S needs to be integrated a bit more. I see that you are using it to help “ d o w n “ sit on the page. That’s good… but it also seem to interfere with the start of the article. Maybe it is too dark? Maybe it needs to push the word over and up… so “down” sits to the right of “Alice” where we will follow it more easily. Keep thinking about this element… it will be worth it, since it’s a large element and the only element that isn’t quite right on the page.
