Project One: Magazine (Blank Canvas)

Blank Canvas Magazine Project

Blank Canvas, a contemporary art magazine taking you to some of the most significant artist and art exhibitions around the world. This magazine is for any person who is an art lover; collector, dealer, and art enthusiast. The magazine will be published on a quarterly basis. I want the reader to be excited when we drop a new publication each time. I want the magazine to be seen as a collectible rather than just end up on another coffee table in a dental office.

  1. I really like the new page you created next to the contents page. It a very interesting graphic and still retains the theme you created for the magazine. The use of color as very nice and helps create unity through out the pages. The only suggestion I would have is to maybe incorporate some of the yellow or red into page 4 to help it be more unified with the other pages.

  2. I love how the left side of the spread has the part of "ICON" hidden by the image and how it's in sepia tones. One thing I would suggest is on the contents page, is to make the words more readable because with the bright yellow, it's kind of hard to read; but that might just be because it's so small on screen and it's probably better printed.

  3. Jamaal - a strong piece for sure. I see some details that could still use some attention:

    1. Cover: You don’t need the punctuation after “ICON” in the tag line because of the change of color and style of the font. And removing it will allow the type to sit more comfortably in that space. I suggest you change the date to next summer sometime… so this won’t be dated so soon. Question - is this a print magazine or a digital zine? I’m thinking, because of the facing pages, it will be printed. So… why is the word “magazine” at the top? Maybe if you are differentiating it from an ePub you might say “print magazine”… or something. Not sure, and I may be missing something here. So - if there is a good reason for it, leave it and explain it to me in class!

    2. Ad is great - and you have found just the right design to place next to this very busy, and colorful Contents. Only change I would suggest is to move the date down to the bottom right, and restyle it so it becomes a part of the image. I’m suggesting this because the current placement seems to push up on the MFA logo, and cut off the negative space that could unify the image roof with the spread out heading at top.

    3. Content: Would the large “62” sit more comfortable at the left side of the text, and more in line with the other numbers?

    4. Editorial article: Would it make sense to enlarge the body copy on page 4, since you have isolated it already, and there is ample room for it to become bolder (which you could also do) and serve as strong foundation for the image above it?

Still questioning the size and double black rule around the yellow stripe. Why is it not bleeding off the page, which would help it sit back as part of the background? The text wrap seems a bit tight on the right side of the image. Can you increase just that side, and possibly the bottom? Try it, and see what you think. Lastly - the body copy might benefit from an increase in leading, which will mean it will need a bit more room, and will probably fall lower on the page, and the second column will need to start higher on the page. If you feel like there just isn’t enough space on the page with these changes, I would question the amount of space you have between paragraphs! Opening up the body copy will go a long way in lightening the “gray” value on the page and making this a bit more inviting to read.
