Herbert Bayer Type Specimen

Typographic Portrait and Type Specimen of Typographer Herbert Bayer

Herbert Bayer was a typographer and designer at the Bauhaus in Hausruck Austria. He created what he called the "universal typeface" which was a geometric style and had, as the name implies, a more geometric shape to it, mainly round. I didn't use his actual font because it's really hard to find the actual font and when I did, it was a bit out of my price range so I used a free font that was as close as possible which was Kabel. The body copy seems a bit small but in print, it's plenty readable.

  1. I like it, but some changes I would suggest is giving the "bauhaus" in the title some leading so that its not right on the word bringing. You have a lot of space between the alphabet section and the Herbert Bayer section , so again I would look at the leading. I would try keep the color the same of the words in the background like the Q and 1900. I am not sure what the image on top of the of type portrait is or why its there, but its hard to capture the meaning of it because it not seen anywhere else in the layout. Overall I like the direction you are going but I would play around with the layout more.

  2. Kaitlyn - some thoughts:

    1. The heading seems to be a bit crowded in that space, I wonder if you would consider reducing the pt sizes used, so there would be more negative space of either side (like at least the margin width… or more) and on top and bottom too. Give this some cushion on all sides!

    2. The red icon symbol really catches our eyes… I wonder if, instead of brown, you would consider using that red color on Bauhaus to really emphasize it?

    3. Maybe it would be easier for the reader to have both subheadings “Kabel” and “Centabel” in the same positions relative to their alphabets? (either at bottom, or at top… but not both)

    4. The description of Centabel at the bottom of the page could span 2 columns, starting at lower left… so it sits directly below the Bayer bio… helping us understand that the bio uses Centabel.

    5. The Bayer bio is justified. So… it is important for you to manage the type to eliminate rivers. Consider trying a pt size larger to see if the rivers fill in better. And/or track the paragraphs between -30 and +30 (no more in either direction) to make sure the words seem equally spaces, with no rivers. Try using the alignment of Justification with “Centered Last line” so that last line actually sits FL.

    6. Where can this Type Combo logo go? I think you have placed it in lower right, because you can’t find another place for it. Make another place for it… where should it be?

That’s it - let’s see where this goes!
