For this project we had to pick an art movement and make a menu from it. I picked Suprematism.

  1. The cover of the menu has a cool Japanese contemporary art feel to it; which suprematism then became contemporary over the years. The inside of the menu is a lot going on and its hard for me to find where to look first because the headings are really big and the rectangles taking over the menu. Suprematism has to do with basic geometric forms, so you could of used more circles, lines , and played with the rectangles differently in the menu. You could of used better food photos and proportioned them a little better using line and grid the system. Suprematism is a really cool art movement even though something you don't see much anymore, but its elements are used amongst many artist today. This can come out really good once you work on it some more for sure.

  2. I really like the feel of this menu. Like Jamaal said there is a lot going on though. I think on the second page you could possible use some text underneath the beer picture to take up some of that open space, for instance explaining what item on the menu it is. I really enjoy the cover, I like how simple but also very colorful it is, it gets the point across in a fun colorful way.

  3. Josue - this is a great design, and good example of the art movement in the 1920s. Adding more/different geometric shapes is also a good idea. As was said above - considering the negative space on each spread would be worth your time. Sometimes there seems to be a “hole” of left over negative space (like on page 2 under Beer) and in other places often the type blocks seem to “hit” the edge of an image or element. So sometimes too much space, and other times too little. Formulating a grid system that can be used throughout the piece might help the negative space be integrated, and make the piece be a bit more inviting to read. The chaotic nature of the work is great, but maybe it’s a bit too chaotic? For instance… the columns on the Burgers spread appear to be a bit thinner than the columns on the Beverages spread. And the Desserts spread uses a completely different grid, as well as the grid being slanted - quite a change from the other pages. I don’t mind slanted grids, but you would need to introduce this earlier on the other spreads. Maybe the whole page does not need to be slanted… but just a section on each?

So consistency is something to consider when returning to this design. Also - the back cover isn’t making much sense to me. It appears to belong to another project, with the wooden frame around what looks like the back of a canvas. Can this appear more like the other pages, with the bars and geometric shapes involved? Since we don’t have any contact information elsewhere… maybe this is the place for an address, website, phone number etc. That is the most important info for this page… but if you want to also include the Suprematist movement blurb that would be ok too.

This will be a very strong piece soon.
