I like how you used the line to unify and even break up the page. The orange gives some the pages some contrast which I like. I would of used the orange on all pages to bring the all the pages together. The layout of each page is great and unique.
ReplyDeleteI love how some of the titles have parts that are hidden under the lines and others have elements of orange. I also like how there is a grid structure to the design on each page and how each page is square rather than rectangular. One thing I would change is to have either one letter of each word be orange like in "painting" and "art" that way it would create a stronger unity then what's there now.
ReplyDeleteKristen - This is a great piece to show your typographic skills within different grid systems. Nice, and a really good showpiece for how you work with blocks of type.
ReplyDeleteI do, however, question the lack of color since this an art school! Have you thought about incorporating some more color in these pages? They would absolutely come alive with color, I think. Adding a second color to the black and white images (whether it simply sits behind them, or is actually a duotone) might be a place to start. I notice that there is some clever deconstruction happening to a few titles. Why only a few? And, maybe returning to the cover and reconsidering the placement of the name with the orange off-set “A” would be a last step here. I often return to the cover after I have finished the interior of a design… bringing the cover closer to some techniques I’ve ended up using inside. The way you have worked with the titles on page 1, 3, and 7 show a pretty sophisticated approach. Consistency demands that the same approach be used on the other titles as well… and your design will improve too!
For what ever reason, the Contents page isn’t part of the enlargement possible (weird!). I’m wondering if you might want to pull some smaller versions of the photos you have used onto this page too… to show us what grid you might be using on this page!
